Sean Kelly was one of the finest cyclists that Ireland, Europe and the world has ever seen and it was in the beautiful County Waterford in the South East of Ireland that he learned that craft. Now, in paying tribute to the name of Sean Kelly, Hibernia Cycling Tours invites you to pedal the hills and valleys where Kelly’s bike once flashed over the cobbles. Welcome to Kelly country! We have every intention of making your visit a memorable one.

Day 1 - Arrival
After collection from Dublin airport you will be transferred to our Dublin base at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire located right on Dublin Bay (www.royalmarine.ie) This four star hotel has full leisure facilities for you to relax in.

There will be adequate time to get your bike built and in full working order after your journey – we will have one of the Hibernia Cycling Tours crew on hand to assist you with this.  If you so wish, you can head out for a short spin around the south Dublin coast line or perhaps take a stroll on Dun Laoghire pier before you meet the rest of the group and have dinner at the hotel. 



Day 2 - Dublin to Carlow
Terrain – Mountainous
Heading out early on the morning of the 25th of August we will cover mainly mountainous terrain in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains on day 2 taking in the climbs of the Sally Gap (500m – 18km climb at 3% average), Slieve Mann (460m – 5km at 7%) and the famous Shay Elliot climb (380m – 3.2km climb at 7.6% average). 

Not for the faint hearted, our route on our first day of cycling is a challenging one.

Finishing the day in the town of Carlow in the South East of Ireland, we will stay in the Four Star Seven Oaks Hotel (www.sevenoakshotel.com).  You will have full access to the Green Bank leisure centre at the hotel equipped with swimming pool, sauna and steam room.  A massage will be available for tired legs with dinner and a well earned drink to be enjoyed afterwards.

Day 3 - Carlow to Kilkenny via the Slieve Bloom Mountains
Terrain – Mountainous
The Slieve Bloom Mountains will present the group with a unique challenge on day 3.  The route is hilly and mountainous from the start with the major climbs of the ‘Wolf Trap’ (487m, 8km @ 8% average) coming at 65km and ‘The Cut’ (430m, 5km @ 4% average) coming at 80km. The route flattens out to rolling hills as we approach Kilkenny City and the finish of day 3.

Staying in the four-star Hotel Kilkenny (www.hotelkilkenny.ie) in the heart of Kilkenny City you will have full access to the leisure centre with swimming pool and a massage for tired legs. After dinner we will be encouraging the group to experience the many tourist attractions and hospitality of the famous medieval city including Kilkenny Castle.

Day 4 - Kilkenny City to Dungarvan 
Leaving Kilkenny on day 4, the group will transfer by bus directly to Dungarvan for registration.  This is a rest day before the challenge of the Sean Kelly Tour.

There will be adequate time for rest and reslaxation and even a massage! You can also enjoy the 'Kelly Ten Fun Cycle' taking place in the town that day




Day 5 - Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford
Terrain – Mountainous
The Kelly Comeragh Challenge is tough and not for the fainthearted. Almost 160 km (100 miles) in length, it includes two Category One climbs (Seskin Hill and Mahon Falls) but it allows you to follow in the pedal strokes of a legend through the hills and valleys where Kelly’s bike once flashed through. The route dips into the Comeragh Mountains on a couple of occasions to fully test the strength, perseverance and stamina of the riders (www.theseankellytour.com).

Your entry to this event will be guaranteed and full support will be provided on the day.

The town of Dungarvan will be alive with cyclist’s post the event and your cycling holiday experience can be shared and relived with new acquaintances over a pint of Guinness!

DAY 6
After breakfast, boxing of bikes and goodbyes we transfer to Waterford, Shannon or Dublin airport for departure homeward.

  • Bike – we encourage you to bring and cycle your own bike that you’re familiar with, but we do have a limited number of bikes available if you prefer to rent them from us at a supplementary rate
  • Lunches – depending on group consensus we can stop for lunch at various points of interest. However, we recommend the group eats on the road (Tour de France-style) and we will, for a very reasonable supplement, provide food suitable to be carried in your jersey pockets – bars, gels etc
  • Drinks, mini-bar, room service, social activities, entry into tourist attractions etc.
